Self-reported cognitive and emotional benefits of fractal drawing in older adults: a preliminary study
Mihaela Kežman, 2025, drugi znanstveni članki

Opis: In an increasingly ageing society, we frequently encounter challenges related to dementia and cognitive decline, where even minor cognitive changes in older adults can significantly impact their quality of life. Research indicates that engagement in various leisure activities can support cognitive development in the elderly. We aimed to explore whether this could be achieved through artistic activities – specifically, fractal drawing. This technique is based on the principles of free-line drawing and colouring the resulting fields, requiring a certain degree of concentration, precision, imagination, perseverance, memory, fine motor skills, and more. Our objective was to examine whether prolonged participation in the leisure activity of fractal drawing may be related to perceived changes in specific cognitive functions in older adults. As part of the European Erasmus+ project, we organised eight groups of elderly participants (from Slovenia and Croatia) who engaged in fractal drawing activities for two to three months. A total of 117 participants, aged between 60 and 94 years, assessed their emotional functioning, cognitive skills, attention, and concentration through a questionnaire both before and after completing the programme. A paired t-test analysis showed higher scores across most of the areas examined. Our findings suggest that participation in fractal drawing workshops was associated with higher self-reported emotional well-being and attentional focus among older adults. The findings reflect preliminary, self-reported changes that indicate the potential benefits of this art-based activity.

Social robots in the care of older adults: literature review and research agenda
Gordana Šantek-Zlatar, David Bogataj, 2025, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: The advancement of technology in the 21st century has brought numerous innovations to the world in which we live, forcing humanity to adapt. This technological innovation has led to transformations in how we communicate, how we value our interpersonal relationships, and even how we measure our quality of life. The social robot is a product of the 21st century and is a great example of how technology can contribute to one’s quality of life. It is predominantly meant for the older adults. The social robot improves the quality of life for the older adults through offering social experiences and providing emotional responses which ultimately addresses the loneliness issue that many older adults face. In this paper we explore the relationship between the older adults and the effect of the social robot on their quality of life. After a search in the WoS and PubMed’s database of scientific papers, we have extracted 11 helpful scientific papers that offer insights into this possible relationship. After consensus, we found that a social robot can’t replace human warmth and embrace; however, it still offers benefits to the older adults. Research suggests that living with a social robot can create positive interactions that reduce stress and improve a person’s mood. Depending on the design, the social robot can even help organize daily activities and encourage physical activity to contribute to a healthier lifestyle.

The contingency of frailty level with the perception of risks of falls in various living and public environments of older adults
Snježana Brući, David Bogataj, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Aim: This study investigated the association between frailty levels as determined by the Edmonton Frail Scale and the prevalence of perception of the risk of adverse falls in the domestic and outdoor environment among those older adults who fell so hard that they required hospital treatment (H.) and those older adults who had never encountered such a problem related to falls (C.). Predisposing and triggering factors for falls can be controlled, which is of interest from a public health perspective and, therefore, studied here. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 400 pensioners over 65 years of age from Zagreb region (1.2 million inhabitants, and more than 20% are aged 65+), which involved dividing the population into two subgroups: those who had fallen so hard that they had required hospital treatment (here marked “from Hospital”, or H.) and those who had never encountered such a problem related to falls and are registered as a pensioners in the region (here marked “from Community” or C.). The Edmonton Frail Scale and an additional questionnaire were used to assess the impact of frailty on perceptions of the risk of adverse falls in specific areas of their living environment. Data were collected by nurses using a structured questionnaire face-to-face, and a Chi-square test was used to analyze the dependency, while the z + 4 test evaluated the differences in percentage of those who are aware of a fall risk in case of moderate frailty or severe frailty among these two subgroups. Results: A statistically significant dependency was found between the degree of frailty and the prevalence of the perception of fall risk at least in one of the subgroups H. or C., especially in their homes, moving around their home, climbing up and down stairs, and in the kitchen. Comparing the prevalence of perception of the risk between C. and H., the difference in recognition of risk hazard has been significant for climbing up and down stairs. Among the major problems of non-adapted buildings are slippery floors (for C.), poorly installed or no fence at all (for H.), and inadequate or poor lighting (for H.). The perception of external obstacles (sidewalks, distance from institutions, public lighting) also increases with the deterioration of the functional state. Conclusions: The results confirm the importance of individualized adaptation of residential and public spaces in accordance with the degree of frailty. It is necessary to warn older adults about the risks of falling, both those who have not yet had this experience, as well as those who have suffered the consequences that have led to hospitalization, to reduce the frequency and consequences of falls.

Families and some aspects of intergenerational integration in contemporary postmodern society
Jana Goriup, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: Based on the theoretical and empirical results of intergenerational integration and relationships, the paper analyses key aspects of intergenerational relationships in the family and their impact on the well-being of older adults from the beginning of demographic changes, such as the increase in life expectancy, to the change in the age structure of the population worldwide. The analysis of different types of connections and relationships, solidarity, conflict and ambivalence, highlights all the complexity of interactions and the need for a flexible approach in studying and resolving their dynamics, forms of integration and intergenerational relationships, maintaining the mental health of older adults, emphasised on the importance of quality family relationships in ensuring security, purpose and connection. Based on the identified challenges, we propose strategies for improving relationships between older adults and their children, which highlight the importance of open communication, empathetic understanding, setting clear boundaries, cooperation and joint planning, support and solidarity, and seeking professional help. Proposed strategies, such as counselling and support practice, can lead to better outcomes in connecting generations, maintaining the mental health and quality of life of all family members, especially older adults, and promoting the integration of different generations in the family.

How internet use relates to mental health in older adults: findings from the Czech Republic and the Republic of Slovenia
Monika Klun, Tomáš Doseděl, Peter Seljak, Barbara Grintal, Zdenka Milič Kavčič, Jana Goriup, Voyko Kavcic, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Objectives: Older adults face challenges in digital engagement, which may be linked to mental health. This study examines associations between Internet use and mental health indicators—depression, loneliness, and well-being—among older adults in the Czech Republic and the Republic of Slovenia, using data from the SHARE Wave 8 survey. Methods: A sample of 5,201 adults aged 50 + (2,706 Czech, 2,495 Slovenian) was analyzed. Internet use in the past 7 days was the dependent variable. Depression (EURO-D), loneliness (Three-Item Scale), and well-being (CASP-12) served as key independent variables. Binary logistic regression was used, controlling for age, gender, education, and partnership status. To address missing data and enhance analytical robustness, a 1-to-many imputation approach was applied. Results: Internet use was positively associated with higher well-being and negatively associated with depression and loneliness in both countries. These associations were stronger in the Republic of Slovenia as compared to the Czech Republic. Age and education were the most significant control variables. Women and individuals living alone in the Republic of Slovenia were less likely to use the Internet. Conclusion: The findings indicate that mental health is significantly associated with Internet use in both countries, though to different degrees, suggesting that national context moderates the relationship between mental health factors and digital engagement. Nonetheless, the binary measure of Internet use represents a limitation, as it does not capture frequency, intensity, or type of online activity. Interventions promoting digital literacy—particularly among older adults with poorer mental health—could enhance digital inclusion and well-being in aging populations.

Cognitive abilities and internet use among older adults in the Czech Republic and Slovenia
Peter Seljak, Tomáš Doseděl, Barbara Grintal, Zdenka Milič Kavčič, Jana Goriup, Voyko Kavcic, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Introduction: Information and communication technologies (ICT) now play a vital role in addressing a wide range of personal and societal needs across various domains. This cross-sectional study investigates the association between cognitive abilities and ICT use among older adults in the Czech Republic and Republic of Slovenia. Methods: We used data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe wave 8 (2019) for the Czechia and Slovenia. Cognitive abilities were measured through 10-word list learning tasks and numeracy tests, while digital engagement was assessed by the frequency of internet use in the past 7 days. Results: Descriptive analyses and regression modeling revealed that higher cognitive abilities were significantly associated with greater ICT use in both Czechia and Slovenia, even after excluding individuals with probable cognitive impairments. This association remained robust after controlling for age, education, gender, and living arrangements. In addition to advancing age, lower cognitive functioning emerged as a key predictor of digital exclusion. Notably, by age 85, only 30% of cognitively healthy individuals in Czechia and 20% in Slovenia reported using internet. Discussion: Cognitive functioning is a significant and independent predictor of ICT use among older adults in both Czechia and Slovenia. Even after accounting for demographic and social factors, individuals with higher cognitive abilities were more likely to engage with digital technologies. These findings highlight the importance of integrating cognitive health into digital inclusion strategies targeting older populations, particularly in aging societies where technological access is essential for social participation and well-being.

Effectiveness of new reactivation approaches in integrated long-term care : contribution to the long-term care act
Suzanna Mežnarec Novosel, Marija Bogataj, David Bogataj, Eneja Drobež, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Objectives: This study evaluates the effectiveness of an innovative, integrated healthcare approach based on the “Long-term Care (LTC) in the Community” pilot project, aimed at testing solutions for the new LTC Act and associated regulations in Slovenia. It is based on a small sample, which can be financed from European project funds. This methodology is crucial for the subordinate legislation derived from the LTC Act. Methods: We selected beneficiaries who decided to receive integrated services in their home environment in rural areas. Among 132 beneficiaries who received various care services at home, 75 beneficiaries received integrated services to maintain independence, while a control group of 57 persons did not receive these despite eligibility. The hypothesis that the new reactivation and other services to strengthen and maintain independence facilitate a transition to a lower category of LTC within the system of different states of abilities and that new approaches with integrated home care are much moresuccessful were tested using the Z + 4 test. Results: Seven out of eight users’ abilities were improved by an inventive approach to LTC at home, including reactivation activities, with p < 0.025. The probability that the new methods will outperform the old ones for an arbitrarily selected senior eligible for LTC exceeded 0.89. Thus, we used quantitative methods to confirm the reasonableness of the decisions included in the LTC Act and will help to estimate savings in the health fund. Conclusions: These positive results promote the implementation of integrated care strategies, norms, and standards, which will be further articulated in subordinate legislation.
