1. How internet use relates to mental health in older adults: findings from the Czech Republic and the Republic of SloveniaMonika Klun, Tomáš Doseděl, Peter Seljak, Barbara Grintal, Zdenka Milič Kavčič, Jana Goriup, Voyko Kavcic, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Objectives: Older adults face challenges in digital engagement, which may be linked to mental health. This study examines associations between Internet use and mental health indicators—depression, loneliness, and well-being—among older adults in the Czech Republic and the Republic of Slovenia, using data from the SHARE Wave 8 survey. Methods: A sample of 5,201 adults aged 50 + (2,706 Czech, 2,495 Slovenian) was analyzed. Internet use in the past 7 days was the dependent variable. Depression (EURO-D), loneliness (Three-Item Scale), and well-being (CASP-12) served as key independent variables. Binary logistic regression was used, controlling for age, gender, education, and partnership status. To address missing data and enhance analytical robustness, a 1-to-many imputation approach was applied. Results: Internet use was positively associated with higher well-being and negatively associated with depression and loneliness in both countries. These associations were stronger in the Republic of Slovenia as compared to the Czech Republic. Age and education were the most significant control variables. Women and individuals living alone in the Republic of Slovenia were less likely to use the Internet. Conclusion: The findings indicate that mental health is significantly associated with Internet use in both countries, though to different degrees, suggesting that national context moderates the relationship between mental health factors and digital engagement. Nonetheless, the binary measure of Internet use represents a limitation, as it does not capture frequency, intensity, or type of online activity. Interventions promoting digital literacy—particularly among older adults with poorer mental health—could enhance digital inclusion and well-being in aging populations. 2. Cognitive abilities and internet use among older adults in the Czech Republic and SloveniaPeter Seljak, Tomáš Doseděl, Barbara Grintal, Zdenka Milič Kavčič, Jana Goriup, Voyko Kavcic, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Introduction: Information and communication technologies (ICT) now play a vital role in addressing a wide range of personal and societal needs across various domains. This cross-sectional study investigates the association between cognitive abilities and ICT use among older adults in the Czech Republic and Republic of Slovenia. Methods: We used data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe wave 8 (2019) for the Czechia and Slovenia. Cognitive abilities were measured through 10-word list learning tasks and numeracy tests, while digital engagement was assessed by the frequency of internet use in the past 7 days. Results: Descriptive analyses and regression modeling revealed that higher cognitive abilities were significantly associated with greater ICT use in both Czechia and Slovenia, even after excluding individuals with probable cognitive impairments. This association remained robust after controlling for age, education, gender, and living arrangements. In addition to advancing age, lower cognitive functioning emerged as a key predictor of digital exclusion. Notably, by age 85, only 30% of cognitively healthy individuals in Czechia and 20% in Slovenia reported using internet. Discussion: Cognitive functioning is a significant and independent predictor of ICT use among older adults in both Czechia and Slovenia. Even after accounting for demographic and social factors, individuals with higher cognitive abilities were more likely to engage with digital technologies. These findings highlight the importance of integrating cognitive health into digital inclusion strategies targeting older populations, particularly in aging societies where technological access is essential for social participation and well-being. 3. Izboljšanje kognitivnih sposobnosti starejših zaposlenih z računalniškim kognitivnim treningom : doktorska disertacija študijskega programa tretje bolonjske stopnje Socialna gerontologijaZdenka Milič Kavčič, 2025, doktorska disertacija Opis: Uvod: Pospešeno staranje svetovnega prebivalstva bo vodilo do povečanja deleža starejših v delovni sili. Meritve kognitivnih sposobnosti, dobrobiti (well-being), zadovoljstva pri delu in produktivnosti so bile zbrane in ocenjene pred in po-RKT. Rezultati: Udeleženci, ki so opravljali RKT, so izboljšali izvršilne sposobnosti (p = 0,04).
