1. The Synergy of industrial symbiosis, social media, and sustainable development : shaping a circular futureErika Džajić Uršič, 2026, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Opis: This chapter explores the dynamic interplay between industrial symbiosis and social media as catalysts for sustainable development. Industrial symbiosis as a circular economy approach and digital innovation are now tangible and unstoppable realities that profoundly affect every sector of our society, while social media and the web serve as crucial and indispensable platforms for dissemination. This is like a stage and a privileged forum from which to observe, understand and attempt to change the complexity of reality. This combination is particularly relevant for the new generations. Social networks are integral to companies’ and brands’ new communication and sustainable development models. This chapter discusses industrial symbiosis, a collaborative concept where industries share resources and waste. Simultaneously, it explores how the changing role of social media aligns with these principles, promoting a more responsible and aware approach to development and communication. 2. The Significance of meta-reflexivity for the rise of planetary consciousness in the context of European societyTea Golob, Matej Makarovič, 2026, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Opis: The paper considers the notion of planetary consciousness as a conceptual and analytical tool for re-thinking how societies imagine identity, belonging, governance, and responsibility on a global scale. It explores how the concept has been evolving in systemic perspectives rooted in the interconnectedness of life as observed by science, civicactivist perspectives emphasising mutual responsibility and need for cooperation, as well as more spiritual views including visions of Earth as a sacred being. It provides an empirical proxy assessment of planetary
consciousness in a nationally representative sample from Slovenia. Additionally, it explores the relationship of planetary consciousness with individuals’ specific mode of meta-reflexivity and discusses the practical
relevance of this awareness for human behaviour. Ključne besede: Industry 5.0, sustainable development, local sustainable practices, deliberative democracy, digital competences, human well-being Objavljeno v ReVIS: 26.03.2026; Ogledov: 202; Prenosov: 3

3. The Role of scientific knowledge in local sustainable practices : addressing the challenging relationship between science, politics and publicMaruša Gorišek, 2026, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Opis: The article examined how the existing digital media education framework for children and youth in Slovenia aligns with the humancentric principles of Industry 5.0, focusing on human-machine collaboration, ethical engagement with technologies and the future workforce’s digital competences. The article provides insights into how youth themselves perceive how they were media educated growing up in our society. Through analysis of focus group discussions, the study highlights potential gaps or deficiencies in how media education is currently conducted in our society, especially in the context of preparing children and youth for the challenges and opportunities of Industry 5.0. 4. Bridging higher education and local rural development through student-led, work-integrated problem solvingKlavdija Zorec, 2026, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Opis: This chapter explores the implementation and impact of two student-led, problem-based learning (PBL) projects, developed at the Faculty of Information Studies in Novo mesto, Slovenia, in collaboration with local industry and community partners. Situated in rural border regions, the projects engaged students in addressing real-world challenges through interdisciplinary teamwork, student-centered mentorship, and community co-design. Engaging in highly contextualized and reflective project activities, students developed practical solutions that responded
directly to the needs of underserved local communities and organizations, such as digital tools for small businesses and a strategy for adult digital upskilling. The chapter highlights how structured, community-connected
learning fosters student competencies, while supporting inclusive digitalization and rural sustainability, offering a transferable model for integrating socially responsive innovation into curricular and co-curricular
structures in higher education. Ključne besede: problem-based learning, rural development, academic community partnerships, digital inclusion, sustainable development Objavljeno v ReVIS: 26.03.2026; Ogledov: 204; Prenosov: 4

5. Sustainable approaches to addressing the issue of vacant housing in SloveniaBojan Grum, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Vacant housing is increasingly becoming a subject of scientific and political debate in modern European societies, as it presents a significant challenge for the sustainable development of urban areas. This paper analyzes the phenomenon of vacant housing in Slovenia from the perspective of structural factors and the behavioral patterns of property owners. It highlights that solely economic (primarily taxrelated) measures for effectively reducing the number of vacant dwellings, are insufficient, and that a comprehensive, sustainability-oriented approach is needed. The empirical qualitative research reveals that key causes include the physical and functional obsolescence of housing, oversized privately owned dwellings among the elderly population, low incomes, and unresolved property ownership issues. The analysis confirms the high complexity of the issue, which is intertwined with socio-demographic, market, and legal aspects. We find that in order to increase the activation of vacant housing, it is essential to recognize the psychological factors influencing owners’ decisions and to create a supportive environment. This should be facilitated through local policies, public awareness, and education, all of which can contribute to changing behavioral patterns. The results contribute to understanding the systemic shortcomings of the current housing policy and shed light on opportunities for its transition toward more inclusive, socially just, and sustainability-oriented solutions. 6. Causes and challenges of the Danube region countries in attracting and retaining talents as one of the key competitive advantages of the futureJanez Kolar, 2024, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Opis: Today's world resonates with increasing oscillation patterns, which are detectable in different timeframes and phase shifts. These oscillations can be detected in shorter or longer periods. Despite fears that computers would replace humans, there is a growing shortage of competent ICT experts. As technologies like High-Performance Computing (HPC), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Quantum Technologies (QT) advance rapidly, this shortage worsens, raising entry barriers. This chapter examines the colourful Danube region countries' challenges in attracting and retaining ICT talent. It compares countries' understanding of creativity, entrepreneurship, new emerging technologies, and competitiveness alongside their capacities to attract and retain skilled ICT professionals. 7. The fundamental right to a healthy environment and climate-related lawsuitsElijah Sriroshan Sritharan, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Of all the prominent environmental issues in recent decades, global climate change is the most serious and has been widely regarded as the most pressing global environmental problem of the current age. Ongoing carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels are behind the planet’s warming trend. The fossil fuel industry has had a unique role in causing, shaping, advancing, and defining the current unsustainable fossil fuel-dependent global economy. Climate science demands we decarbonise our entire economy to limit global warming to 1.5° Celsius. This paper builds its arguments starting from the universal recognition of the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment by the United Nations General Assembly in 2022. A healthy and functioning environment is a precondition for human welfare. Recognition of the right to a healthy environment contributes to improved environmental outcomes, including cleaner air, enhanced access to safe drinking water and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. One notable development in recent years has been an explosion in climate litigation. The cases are being brought against governments and corporate emitters for breach of environmental and human rights obligations to pressure them to take more ambitious climate action. The two analysed cases from the Netherlands aptly illustrate that human rights arguments played a crucial role in the rulings.
