Opis:Theoretical background: The HPV infection is the most common sexually transmitted disease. The most effective measure to prevent this infection and its consequences is vaccination. To a significant degree, the potential of the vaccine remains untapped, as the vaccination rate in Slovenia is too low. Greater awareness of the importance of vaccination against the HPV infection could have a significant impact on a higher vaccination rate. High school students are more likely to take the rational decision if they have the right knowledge; therefore, the aim of this master's thesis was to determine the degree of awareness of high school students of the importance of vaccination against the HPV infection. Research methodology: A quantitative work method was used. The research instrument was a survey, which was based on a literature overview. The research sample comprised 264 high school students attending the Ormož Gymnasium. Results: In the research, 59,8 % of high school students declared that they are vaccinated against the HPV infection, yet the vaccination rate differs in terms of gender. Most high school students are aware that HPV causes infections of the genitalia and reproductive organs, but too few of them are aware that it also causes infections of the anus and oral part of the oesophagus. High school students possess too little knowledge on the transmission of the infection and effective prevention methods as well as the intention of vaccination against the HPV infection. More than a third of high school students are not aware that both women and men can get vaccinated against the HPV infection. Among high school students, there were significant differences in the awareness when comparing male and female students as well as those who were vaccinated and those who were not. Discussion and conclusion: The degree of awareness of high school students of the importance of vaccination against the HPV infection is not adequate. More than a half of them possess too little information on vaccination and more than a half of them expressed the desire to obtain additional information. These research findings are useful for further plans on how to promote vaccination against the HPV infection.
