Title:EXPERIENCES OF PEOPLE WITH MALADAPTIVE DAYDREAMING
Abstract:The phenomenon of maladaptive daydreaming remains largely unexplored and unknown, yet it has been garnering increasing attention within the scientific community due to its potential to adversely impact various facets of individuals' lives. In recent years, there has been a surge in research investigating the myriad aspects of maladaptive daydreaming. However, the disorder has predominantly been examined through the lenses of behavioural addiction and dissociative disorders. In our study, we delved into the experiences of individuals suffering from maladaptive daydreaming, focusing on a sample from the Slovenian population. Participants for the research were selected based on two criteria: they were required to attain a specific score on the MDS-16 scale for maladaptive daydreaming and to self-identify their daydreaming as maladaptive. We conducted individual interviews with ten participants as a part of our qualitative research, during which individuals shared their subjective experiences. This included discussing triggers, frequency, duration, and content of their daydreams, as well as their emotional and cognitive reactions to these experiences. Additionally, we sought to comprehend the repercussions of maladaptive daydreaming on individuals' daily lives, including its impact on their professional and academic performance, interpersonal relationships, and mental health. Although the stories and experiences varied from one individual to another, certain commonalities were identified across all participants. These included a tendency to conceal the behaviour due to associated feelings of shame and guilt, as well as a sense of helplessness in controlling the behaviour and its detrimental effects on their quality of life. Maladaptive daydreaming rarely manifests as a standalone disorder; it is frequently characterized by comorbidity, a pattern that was also observed among our interviewees. Despite the absence of consensus within the scientific community and the lack of official recognition for maladaptive daydreaming as a diagnosis, our research unequivocally underscores the imperative for further exploration, as well as heightened awareness and understanding of maladaptive daydreaming among psychotherapists, counsellors, and the general public.
