Abstract:Uvod: Poškodbe hrbtenice, zlasti travmatske, predstavljajo pomemben svetovni zdravstveni problem z visoko obolevnostjo in umrljivostjo, pri čemer so najpogostejši vzroki prometne nesreče in padci.

Abstract:Introduction: Spinal injuries, particularly traumatic ones, represent a significant global health problem with high morbidity and mortality rates, with the most common causes being traffic accidents and falls. Incidence of these injuries increases with the aging population, especially in cervical spine injuries. In Slovenia poor knowledge of first aid increases the fear of providing assistance, highlighting the need for educational programs for the older population. Research Methodology: The thesis is based on quantitative research using a questionnaire containing 22 questions. The theoretical part utilized a descriptive method. We employed a self-structured questionnaire that included questions related to first aid in cases of suspected spinal injuries, as well as demographic data such as education, gender, and age. The questionnaire was accessible on the 1ka website. The sample consisted of 80 individuals aged 18 to 60 who live in Slovenia and are not employed in healthcare. Data were processed using Microsoft Excel and presented with graphs. The sampling was conducted in September 2024. Results: The results of the study indicated that respondents aged 18 to 29 have a better grasp of theoretical knowledge regarding first aid compared to older respondents. Most participants are capable of recognizing more than two signs of spinal injury, although nearly half can only identify one or two signs, suggesting a lack of comprehensive knowledge. Many respondents expressed a desire to attend a first aid course, indicating their awareness of the importance of this knowledge. Discussion and Conclusion: The findings suggest that younger individuals possess a better understanding of theoretical first aid knowledge, possibly due to more accessible educational resources. However, significant gaps remain in understanding the symptoms of injuries. Increasing awareness of the importance of first aid could enhance individuals' preparedness to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
