Abstract:Uvod: Zaradi pospešenega staranja se družba sooča z vedno večjim številom obolelih oseb z demenco.

Abstract:Introduction: Due to the acceleration of ageing, society is facing an increasing number of people with dementia. Dementia is a disease that causes various problems such as cognitive, social and emotional problems that have a significant impact on the lives of people with dementia. This thesis explores the impact of music therapy and music activities on the quality of life of people with dementia. Methods: In this study, we used a qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews with ten employees of the Ptuj Retirement Home, to gain important insights into their views and experiences of music activities in institutional care and working with people with dementia. We analysed the data using an inductive approach, creating twenty-three codes and grouping them into five categories. In this way, we identified key themes and linked them to the impact of the music interventions. Results: A qualitative analysis of employees opinions at the Ptuj Retirement Home showed that they consider the use of music activities in working with people with dementia to have a number of positive effects. Employees reported improvements in mood, cognitive abilities, communication, social interactions; people with dementia also found it easier to express their emotions in this way. The use of music also improved the well-being of employees. Discussion and Conclusion: Music is highlighted as one of the most important non pharmacological approaches to working with people with dementia in institutional care. Active involvement of staff and regular use of music activities in working with people with dementia, as well as appropriate training in this area, are key to their effective use. The findings show that the use of new methods such as music therapy can further contribute to improving the lives of people with dementia.
