Abstract:Theoretical Background: Knowledge of autism among the pedagogical workers, such as educators and teachers, plays a key role in recognizing and supporting children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), especially in educational institutions. The aim of the theoretical part was to determine how well educators in early childhood are familiar with autism, while the empirical part focused on how they recognize autism at their work, how often they participate in training related to ASD, and what the differences are regarding their awareness of working with children with ASD. Method: In the theoretical part, a descriptive method of literature review was used. In the empirical part, a quantitative method was applied, specifically a questionnaire about the knowledge of autism among the pedagogical workers in educational institutions. The questionnaire was distributed electronically to the participants. The survey was conducted in the Carinthian region, specifically in Ravne na Koroškem, Dravograd, Radlje ob Dravi and in Slovenj Gradec. Results: The results of the study indicated that pedagogical workers in educational institutions frequently encounter children with ASD. Better knowledge of ASD allows for a more appropriate selection of specific approaches that contribute to the successful development and response of children with ASD. The results also highlighted the lack of training, didactic materials, and environmental adaptations for children with ASD. The educators also emphasized the importance of companions for children with ASD. Discussion: Despite the extensive literature on ASD, I believe that there is still insufficient knowledge in this area and a lack of awareness that early recognition and appropriate intervention during the preschool years can make a significant achievement. In my opinion, the pedagogical workers should be familiar with the signs and consequences of ASD to make these children develope successfully and function well.
