| Abstract: | In this dissertation, I explore, document, and map out a practical, achievable, standardized method of archives arrangement that not only provides archivists with an approach to controlling records physically or digitally and makes them discoverable intellectually, but also allows archivists to preserve the fuller context of the records’ creation for their own use as well as that of the researcher. Further, the purpose of the dissertation is to discover, discuss, and document support for this method of archives arrangement that I developed over time. I wish to share my method, as well as the intellectual justification for and path leading to, its formation with the aim of making it useful not only to archivists but also for researchers. This dissertation proposes: • How to preserve and make accessible the structure, content, and context of archival records1 within a standardized framework; • How a modification of the record group2 concept, joined with an accounting of changes in bureaucratic reporting structures, can provide valuable and accessible information to archivists and archives users about the context of organizational records or personal papers; • How traditional architectural paradigms can instruct and be put to use in archives arrangement; • How web design practice and technology, specifically information architecture, can offer a blueprint for the control and discoverability of archival records; and • How archivists can employ a practical, actionable, standardized approach to impart archives arrangement, much as the field has constructed and embraced standardized methods for archival description. |
