Title:AAnalysis of Depression Prevalence Among Elderly Living in Home Environments in Relation to Sociodemographic Factors
Abstract:Late-life depression is an important public health problem that often remains unrecognised and untreated, which can have a major impact on the quality of life of the elderly. Elderly people who are not included in systemic institutional treatment are particularly overlooked. The purpose of the research is to examine the incidence of depressive symptoms in the population of the elderly people living in a home environment and to identify relations between signs of depression and various sociodemographic factors and the presence of chronic diseases. 123 elderly people aged 65 and over living in a home environment participated in the research. The Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) was used to assess depressive symptoms. In addition, the respondents completed a questionnaire that included sociodemographic data, including age, gender, marital status, area of residence, and presence of chronic diseases. The results of the research showed that 40.2% of participants had symptoms of depression, with 12.8% of individuals having mild, 12.0% moderate and 15.4% severe rate of depression. The strongest risk factors for developing depression were marital status (loss of a companion) and the presence of chronic diseases. The analysis did not show a statistically significant relation between depression and age, gender or area of residence. The research findings emphasise the importance of early detection and treatment of depression in the elderly, especially in people with health problems and those who live alone. The use of screening tools such as GDS-15 can help detect depression early and improve access to appropriate treatment, which would have a positive impact on the quality of life of the elderly.
