Title:Awareness of the Importance of Burnout Prevention Among Future Psychosocial Support Professionals
Abstract:Burnout is a serious issue in modern society, arising from prolonged exposure to stress, particularly in the workplace. Helping professions, such as psychosocial support professionals, are especially susceptible to burnout due to the demanding interactions with their clients. The purpose of this study is to examine the awareness of burnout prevention among future psychosocial support professionals. This can contribute to greater awareness and the implementation of effective strategies for preventing burnout among these professionals and beyond. Consequently, the quality of psychosocial support for clients may also improve. Additionally, the study aims to identify potential knowledge gaps and highlight them to educational institutions where these professionals are trained. The study was conducted on a sample of seven female students completing the Psychosocial Support (BA) study program. The sampling was purposive, using a practical sample. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed using qualitative content analysis. The results indicate that future psychosocial support professionals recognise the great importance of burnout prevention. They perceive this topic as crucial yet often overlooked. For them, prevention is not only about avoiding negative consequences but also about professional responsibility, personal self-regulation, and concrete preventive measures. They mostly recognise individually oriented measures, emphasizing self-care, interpersonal relationships, and professional identity as protective factors against burnout. They also find it important to address certain organizational factors, such as working conditions, and individual factors, such as personality traits (e.g., perfectionism), psychological patterns, and more. Professionals are more likely to burn out if they are emotionally vulnerable or exhibit risky behavioural patterns.
