Abstract:Theoretical Background: Oncology nursing is a field characterized by the specific nature of illnesses, where professionals encounter numerous moral and ethical challenges that can lead to moral distress. In this thesis, we aimed to determine the frequency of moral distress among oncology nurses and to identify the most common causes for its occurrence. Methodology: A quantitative research approach was used, employing the standardized MMD-HP questionnaire. The study was conducted at the Oncology Institute of Ljubljana, involving 48 healthcare professionals from various educational backgrounds. Data were processed using Microsoft Excel, and percentages were calculated to interpret the findings. Results: Among the healthcare workers at the Oncology Institute of Ljubljana, both the frequency and intensity of moral distress were found to be lower compared to similar studies. The results indicated differences in the experience of moral distress based on genders and years of service, although no significant impact of age was observed. Additionally, we discovered that the main reasons for higher intensity levels of distress were due to patient-level situations in 38.6% of cases, systemic-level situations in 32.5%, and unit/team-level situations in 25.9%. Consistent with international studies, we found that more than a quarter of the participants (26.1%) reported considering changing jobs due to moral distress.
