Abstract:Theoretical background: Many physical and cognitive-mental changes occur during ageing that affect health. In order to maintain and improve health, we need to be active by being physically active, eating a healthy diet, maintaining healthy relationships, sleeping habits, personal and household hygiene, etc. Methodology: In addition to descriptive statistics, a quantitative research method was applied using a self-administered questionnaire. The sample consisted of 50 elderly people from the Ljutomer statistical region. For the interpretation of the results, tabular numerical and percentage display was used with the help of Microsoft Excel. Results: 80% of respondents think they live a healthy life and 68% of respondents think they are most responsible for ensuring their own health. 66% of respondents consider that they have enough knowledge about taking care of their own health, most of it coming from television (68%) and the internet (48%). 42% of respondents consider that they are aware of taking care of their own health, among whom 10% are very aware. 59% of respondents consider that they have enough knowledge to take care of their own health and 16% the opposite. 16% consider that they have enough knowledge to take care of their own health. In this respect, 42% of the respondents have a good or very good knowledge of the factors for ensuring and maintaining health. However, 82% of respondents think they could do more for their own health. Discussion: Older adults are the most aware of physical activity and healthy eating, and the least aware of measures to ensure healthy sleep and hygiene when it comes to ensuring their own health.
