V oftalmologiji, kjer delo pogosto vključuje stik z zelo občutljivim očesnim tkivom, so tudi vse okoliščine in razmere še posebej občutljive. Potrebna so vlaganja v dodatno usposabljanje, v izboljšanje organizacije dela, v nadgradnjo opreme ter v večje vključevanje pacientov v higienske ukrepe.

Title:PREVENTION OF HOSPITAL-ACQUIRED INFECTIONS IN OPHTHALMOLOGY
Abstract:Background: Nosocomial infections pose a serious threat to patient safety and the efficiency of healthcare systems, as they prolong hospitalization and increase treatment costs. In ophthalmology, where procedures often involve direct contact with delicate ocular tissue, the risk is particularly high. The aim of this study was to examine how nurses perceive their role in preventing nosocomial infections, which preventive measures they apply, what challenges they face, and what improvements they suggest. Methods: A qualitative research study was conducted based on semi-structured interviews with six nurses employed in ophthalmology. The sample was purposive. Data were analysed using thematic coding, which resulted in the identification of key content themes: types of infections in ophthalmology, the role and responsibility of nurses, preventive measures, high-risk procedures, shortcomings in protocol implementation, challenges and obstacles in infection prevention, and suggestions for improvements. Results: Participants identified conjunctivitis, keratitis, endophthalmitis, and blepharitis as the most common nosocomial infections. They emphasized the importance of hand hygiene, disinfection of equipment and surfaces, proper use of protective equipment, and patient education. The main challenges included staff shortages, time constraints, fatigue, and outdated equipment. Nevertheless, all nurses agreed that they play a crucial role in the prevention of nosocomial infections. Discussion: The findings show that nurses are highly aware of the importance of infection prevention, but their efforts are often limited by systemic issues. Investment is needed in additional training, better organization of work, equipment upgrades, and increased patient involvement in hygiene practices.
