Abstract:Izhodišča: Okužba s Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) predstavlja eno najpogostejših bolnišničnih okužb prebavil, povezanih z uporabo antibiotikov in dolgotrajnega bivanja v zdravstvenih ustanovah.

Title:PATIENT INFECTION WITH CLOSTRIDIUM DIFFICILE
Abstract:Background: Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) infection is one of the most common hospital-acquired gastrointestinal infections, associated with antibiotic use and prolonged stays in healthcare facilities. The disease is linked to high morbidity; therefore, knowledge of preventive measures and timely intervention are of crucial importance. Nurses play a central role in preventing and controlling the infection, as their expertise, prompt action, and education of patients and their families significantly contribute to limiting the spread of the disease. The aim of this study was to determine how nurses recognize the symptoms of infection, understand the routes of transmission, and implement preventive measures. Methods: A qualitative approach with a descriptive method was used. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with seven nurses employed in a hospital and a nursing home. The analysis was based on thematic categorization of responses. Results: All interviewees identified diarrhea, frequent bowel movements, and the characteristic odor of stool as key symptoms. Most were familiar with the basic route of transmission (fecal–oral route) and preventive measures (hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment, contact isolation). However, they highlighted lack of time, staffing shortages, and insufficient training as the main barriers to implementing preventive measures. Discussion: The results indicate good knowledge of symptoms and preventive measures but also reveal limitations in practical implementation due to organizational factors. Additional training and management support are essential to improve infection control.
