Abstract:Raziskava obravnava ekonomske učinke članstva Slovenije v Evropski uniji (EU), pri čemer se v analizi osredotočamo na gibanje ključnih makroekonomskih agregatov, in sicer bruto domači proizvod (BDP) na prebivalca, stopnjo zaposlenosti, neposredne tuje investicije, trgovinsko bilanco in mobilnost študentov v okviru programa Erasmus+.

Title:ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF SLOVENIA´S ACCESSION TO THE EU
Abstract:The study examines the economic effects of Slovenia’s membership in the European Union (EU), focusing on the dynamics of key macroeconomic aggregates, namely real gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, employment rate, foreign direct investment (FDI), trade balance, and student mobility within the Erasmus+ program. Using a time series methodological approach, the aim was to analyse how these aggregates evolved following Slovenia’s accession to the EU and to investigate the interrelationships between them. Hypotheses were formulated and empirically tested using simple and multiple regression analyses, evaluating both the direction and statistical significance of the impact of individual factors on real GDP per capita. The results indicate that employment growth has a positive effect on real GDP per capita, confirming the importance of the labour market for economic stability. The trade balance improved after EU accession, although it occasionally exhibited negative effects related to higher imports, which was also confirmed by the regression analysis. Foreign direct investment proved to be an important factor for economic growth, although subject to fluctuations due to global crises and domestic structural constraints. The Erasmus+ program significantly contributed to the internationalization of education, indirectly supporting the long-term growth of human capital and competitiveness. Based on the analysis, recommendations were developed to enhance the benefits of EU membership, including increasing the attractiveness for foreign investment, strengthening export competitiveness, and further supporting educational mobility. The study thus provides a comprehensive overview of the economic benefits of Slovenia’s EU membership and serves as a basis for further research.
