Title:THE ROLE OF THE NURSE IN CHILD WITH ACUTE RESPIRATORY DISEASES
Abstract:ABSTRACT Theoretical background: Acute respiratory diseases are among the most common reasons for children’s visits to physicians and for their hospitalization. Nurses play a key role in this context, as they are involved in monitoring and caring for patients, educating children and their parents, and in the early recognition of symptoms. Their work also includes administering prescribed therapy and providing emotional support to the child and the family. The aim of this study was to examine the role of nurses in the management of children with acute respiratory diseases and to determine how their contribution can influence faster recovery and higher quality of health care. Methods: A qualitative research approach with a descriptive method was used. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with six nurses employed in pediatric departments. The data were analyzed using content analysis, and the interview responses were coded and interpreted. The sample was purposive and consisted of nurses from the researcher’s social network. The research was conducted in June 2025. Results: The findings showed that nurses perform numerous tasks, including monitoring respiratory status, performing suctioning, administering oxygen therapy, and actively participating in the health care team. Their role in educating parents, providing emotional support, and ensuring effective communication was also emphasized. The main challenges identified by nurses were stress, emotional burden, and staff shortages. Discussion: The results confirm the important role of nurses in the comprehensive care of children with acute respiratory diseases. Key suggestions for improving practice include additional professional training, provision of psychological support for staff, and strengthening collaboration with families. The findings provide a basis for further research and for the development of pediatric nursing practices. Keywords: nursing care, nurse, child, acute respiratory diseases, interview.
