Abstract:Magistrsko delo z naslovom Sodobni položaj žensk v zen budizmu obravnava kompleksno prepletenost med tradicijo, kulturo in spolom znotraj ene izmed najbolj vplivnih vej budizma. Tematska analiza intervjujev razkrije šest osrednjih tem: zgodovinski in sodobni razvoj, ženske v vodstvu, patriarhalne strukture in ovire, vpliv feminizma in kulture Zahoda, skupnostna podpora ter notranja duhovna izkušnja žensk.

Title:The Contemporary Position of Women in Zen Buddhism
Abstract:The master’s thesis titled The Contemporary Position of Women in Zen Buddhism explores the complex intersection of tradition, culture, and gender within one of the most influential branches of Buddhism. The aim of the research is to examine how the role of women in Zen has developed historically. It also examines how it is evolving in the contemporary context, both in Eastern and Western settings. The study combines a theoretical review of key literature in religious studies, feminist theology, and Buddhist studies. It also has empirical section based on qualitative interviews with women (and one man) from diverse cultural backgrounds actively involved in Zen communities. Thematic analysis of the interviews revealed six central themes: historical and contemporary development, women in leadership, patriarchal structures and barriers, the influence of feminism and Western culture, community support, and women’s inner spiritual experience. Each theme highlights different aspects of gender dynamics in Zen Buddhism, from institutional hierarchies to personal strategies of resilience and growth. Particular attention is given to the influence of feminist thought and Western values on the reinterpretation of Zen doctrine and practice, which often opens space for greater inclusion of women and the reshaping of traditional norms. At the same time, the analysis reveals persistent structural obstacles, especially in more conservative environments. These obstacles continue to limit equal participation of women. The findings affirm that, despite Zen Buddhism’s reputation for openness, gender equality remains an ongoing challenge. Nevertheless, women across different contexts are creating alternative forms of leadership, spiritual authority, and communal support. Their personal stories reflect significant shifts happening at the intersection of religion, gender, and culture.
