Abstract:POVZETEK Magistrska naloga preučuje pojavnost populizma v političnem komuniciranju slovenskih kandidatov za evropskega poslanca v izbranih predvolilnih televizijskih soočenjih za evropske volitve 2024. Kljub njegovi izmuzljivi naravi smo s pomočjo kvalitativne vsebinske analize transkriptov in na podlagi deduktivno razvite kodirne sheme identificirali pojavnost populizma. Najpogosteje sta se rabe tega fenomena posluževala Zoran Stevanović (lista Resni.ca) in Violeta Tomić (lista NOT).

Title:The Prevalence of Populism in the Political Communication of Slovenian Candidates for the 2024 European Parliament Elections
Abstract:ABSTRACT The master's thesis examines the prevalence of populism in the political communication of Slovenian candidates for Members of the European Parliament in selected pre-election television debates for the 2024 European elections. Despite its elusive nature, with the help of qualitative content analysis of transcriptions and based on a deductively developed coding scheme, we identified the presence of populism. The results of the analysis showed that all representatives of the eleven candidate lists de facto made use of populism strategies or approaches, with the differences being reflected mainly in the way they were used. Populism appeared through three key elements or categories: references to the »people«, criticism of the »elites« and antagonism toward the »others«. The most frequent use of this phenomenon was made by Zoran Stevanović (Resni.ca list) and Violeta Tomić (NOT list). Stevanović, with his self-identification as a populist, ranked among sui generis phenomena. His statement is in fact a true rarity or unicum, since political actors usually attach such »labels« to their opponents. The findings of the research confirm the chameleonic nature of populism, as it appeared both in parliamentary and non-parliamentary parties, as well as on the left and right of the political spectrum. In this aspect, it also proved to be an adaptable phenomenon that transcends traditional political divisions and thus establishes itself as a communication strategy of contemporary political actors.
