Title:Engaging migrants and their descendants in artistic activities as a successful model of integration in Slovenian society : masters thesis
Abstract:Migration flows to Europe and consequently to Slovenia are increasing and require the adaptation of the existing receiving country to the new social structure and care for vulnerable groups - refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers – who need immediate support and inclusion in effective integration processes. The aim of the thesis is to collect and systematically review different aspects of the migrant issue, from the common misunderstanding of the terminology used to describe migrants, the reasons for their migration, public discourses on the migrant question, and to the current legislation governing integration policy in the Republic of Slovenia. We pay special attention to integration processes, among which we are particularly interested in the integration of immigrants through the arts, starting from the assumption that some immigrants bring with them certain skills in the arts, and that at the same time, engaging through cultural content also enables others to preserve and nurture their cultural traditions. We have found that migrants are subject to discrimination and that by actively engaging in the field of the arts, they can raise awareness of their cultural heritage in the wider society and contribute to cultural diversity and harmonious coexistence. In the final part of the thesis, through selected local, good practices taken from NGOs and our own qualitative research – collecting data through semistructured interviews, we formulated possible modules for the involvement of vulnerable groups of migrants and their descendants from Africa and the Middle East in artistic content that can meet their needs and at the same time enrich our increasingly multicultural environment.
