Title:Ali je znanje slovenskega jezika pogoj za čutenje slovenske etnične identitete

Abstract:Z magistrsko nalogo smo želeli raziskati kakšno vlogo ima znanje slovenskega jezika pri čutenju in ohranjanju slovenske etnične identitete pri Slovencih izven meja Slovenije, na primeru zamejcev v Italiji in izseljencev ter njihovih potomcev v ZDA in Argentini. V nalogi ugotavljamo, da se slovenski jezik v tujini počasi in vztrajno izgublja, najbolj v ZDA, medtem ko se je v Argentini po zaslugi tamkajšnje etnične skupnosti in zgodovinsko – političnih dejavnikov uspel dokaj dobro ohraniti. Ohranil se je samo pri 3. valu izseljencev iz političnih razlogov. Pri prvih dveh izselitvenih valovih se je slovenski jezik ravno tako izgubil. V teoretičnem delu naloge smo opisali zgodovinske prelomnice, ki so razdelile slovensko etnično ozemlje in kako je potekalo izseljevanje s slovenskega etničnega ozemlja. Opredelili smo identiteto in jezik in primerjali kako se slovenska etnična identiteta v teh skupnostih ohranja. V empiričnem delu smo uporabili kvantitativni pristop in metodo anketnega vprašalnika. S podrobnejšimi statističnimi analizami smo pregledali, kako se Slovenci v vseh treh skupinah in z različnim znanjem slovenskega jezika razlikujejo v nekaterih odgovorih ankete. Uporaba in ohranjanje slovenskega jezika je najintenzivnejše v naši neposredni bližini, v zamejstvu, prav tako pojmovanje slovenske etnične identitete v povezanosti z znanjem slovenskega jezika. Tam, kjer se slovenski jezik v skupnosti izgublja, ga nadomeščajo drugi etnični atributi, predvsem hrana in ohranjanje narodnih običajev in navad ter aktivno sodelovanje v etnični skupnosti. Kot se spreminja sam jezik skozi čas, se spreminja tudi pomembnost atributov etničnosti, stare nadomeščajo novi, sodobnejši. Globalizacija in digitalizacija spreminjata tudi delovanje in pojavnost etničnih skupnosti, tradicionalne oblike delno nadomeščajo virtualne. Kako pojmujemo svojo slovensko etnično identiteto in kako se opredeljujemo, je odvisno od vsakega posameznika in njegovega zaznavanja pomembnosti določenega etničnega atributa, pri čemer jezik ni nujno na prvem mestu. Tudi brez znanja slovenskega jezika lahko čutiš slovensko etnično pripadnost.

Title:Is the Slovenian ethnic identity conditioned by the knowledge of Slovenian?
Abstract:The dissertation aims at researching the role Slovene plays in feeling and preserving the Slovenian ethnic identity outside Slovenia's borders, based on the examples of ethnic Slovenes living in Italy, as well as Slovenian immigrants and their descendants in the U.S.A and Argentina. The dissertation establishes that Slovene abroad is losing ground, slowly and surely, mostly in the U.S.A, while the Slovene ethnic community in Argentina has managed to preserve it relatively well due to historical and political factors. Slovene has only been preserved in the third wave of immigrants, who came to Argentina due to political reasons. The first two waves had lost their language just the same. The theory part of the dissertation identifies the historical milestones that divided the Slovene ethnic territory and the progression of emigration from it. Identity and language are defined, and the preservation of the Slovene ethnic identity is compared across the immigrant communities. The empirical part uses a quantitative approach and the method of a polling questionnaire. Detailed statistical analyses differentiate how Slovenes in all three groups and with different levels of Slovene provide answers to certain questions in the poll. The use and preservation of Slovenian is strongest in Slovenia's immediate vicinity across the border, and the same applies to the feeling of the Slovenian ethnic identity in relation to the knowledge of Slovenian. In places where Slovenian is receding in communities, other ethnic attributes come to the forefront, especially the cuisine and the keeping alive of traditions, as well as being active in the ethnic community. As language changes with time, the relevance of ethnic attributes also changes. New, contemporary attributes substitute old ones. Globalization and digitization affect the activity and appearance of ethnic communities. Traditional forms are partially replaced by virtual ones. Feeling and declaring one's Slovenian ethnic identity depends on every individual and how they perceive the relevance of a specific ethnic attribute. Language does not necessarily come first. Even without knowing Slovenian, one can feel Slovenian.
