Job satisfaction of nurses and identifying factors of job satisfaction in Slovenian hospitals

Abstract: Aim. To determine the level of job satisfaction of nursing professionals in Slovenian hospitals and factors influencing job satisfaction in nursing. Methods. The study included 4 hospitals selected from the hospital list comprising 26 hospitals in Slovenia. The employees of these hospitals represent 29.8% and 509 employees included in the study represent 6% of all employees in nursing in Slovenian hospitals. One structured survey questionnaire was administered to the leaders and the other to employees, bothconsisting 154 items evaluated on a 5 point Likert-type scale. We examinedthe correlation between independent variables (age, number of years ofemployment, behavior of leaders, personal characteristics of leaders, and managerial competencies of leaders) and the dependent variable (job satisfaction - satisfaction with the work, coworkers, management, pay, etc) byapplying correlation analysis and multivariate regression analysis. In addition, factor analysis was used to establish characteristic components of the variables measured. Results. We found a medium level of job satisfaction in both leaders (3.49Ž0.5) and employees (3.19Ž0.6), however, there was a significant difference between their estimates (t=3.237; P=lt;0.001). Job satisfaction was explained by age (Plt;0.05; Ž=0.091), years of employment (Plt;0.05; Ž=0.193), personal characteristics of leaders (Plt;0.001; Ž=0.158),and managerial competencies of leaders (Plt;0.000; Ž=0.634) in 46% ofcases. The factor analysis yielded four factors explaining 64% of the total job satisfaction variance. Conclusion. Satisfied employees play a crucial rolein an organization's success, so health care organizations must be aware of the importance of employees' job satisfaction. It is recommended to monitoremployees' job satisfaction levels on an annual basis.

Integracija kvantitativne in kvalitativne metodologije v raziskavah v zdravstvu

Abstract: Background: The popularity of integrating quantitative and qualitative methodologies in the same research has grown incredibly in recent years. There is a lack of evidence about the efficiency of mixed methods use in health sciences research practice. The purpose of this study was to analyse the areas, main research themes, mixed methods research design typologies and efficiency of implementation and further open questions regarding mixed methods in health sciences. Methods: A systematic review was made on a sample of 25 scientific articles of health sciences that stated mixed methods use in research. Inclusion criteria: original scientific article with applying and evaluating of mixed methods, published during the period July 2006 - July 2011 in a peer reviewed journal, included in international databases: WebSurveyMethodology, CINAHL, MEDLINE and PubMed. Results: All 25 studies provided effectiveness of mixed methods use in health science research practice. Mixed methods are the most popular in nursing (32%) and health promotion (28%). Sequential mixed methods research design is prevalent (64.3%), with the first research phase in priority (71.4%). The relation between quantitative (57.2%) and qualitative (42.8%) priority approach is balanced. Complementarity (57.1%), triangulation (28.6%) and expansion (14.3%) are the most common research purposes for using mixed methods in health sciences. Conclusions: The presented findings confirmed mixed methods applicability for the complex and less studied research problems in health sciences. Conceptualisation of mixed methods in different disciplines of health sciences, development of quality criteria and standards for mixed methods research assessment and expansion of mixed methods in clinical practice as support in evidence based practice development appeared as the most important research questions of mixed methods in health sciences that should be addressed in the future studies.

Znanja in stališča študentov zdravstvene nege in kliničnih mentorjev do dela s starostniki

Abstract: Teoretična izhodišča: Glede na demografske trende se pričakuje povečevanje potreb po zdravstveni negi in oskrbi starih ljudi. Kakovostno zdravstveno nego in oskrbo starih ljudi je mogoče zagotoviti le s kadrom, ki ima z dodiplomskim in podiplomskim izobraževanjem pridobljeno znanje na področju dela s starimi ljudmi in z zmanjšanjem negativnega odnosa do starih v družbi. Metoda: Deskriptivno-kvantitativno raziskavo smo izvedli v juniju 2010 na namenskem vzorcu študentov zdravstvene nege (n = 61) in kliničnih mentorjev (n = 40). V anketi zaprtega tipa smo uporabili preverjene in splošno uporabljene merske instrumente: Palmorov kviz o dejstvih o staranju % FAQ1, Koganov instrument za merjenje odnosa do starih ljudi % KAOP, Nolan%s Perceptions of Working with Older People (PWOP). Podatke smo statistično obdelali s statističnim paketom SPSS 20.0. Rezultati: Raziskava opozori na prisotnost negativnega odnosa do starih ljudi med anketiranci in nizko stopnjo znanja o starih ljudeh, saj so samo študenti v povprečju dosegli 44,6 % pravilnih odgovorov, klinični mentorji pa 48,7 %. Kar 82,1 % kliničnih mentorjev in 55,9 % študentov je izrazilo željo po delu na področju zdravstvene nege starostnika.Več zanimanja za delo s starimi ljudmi so izrazili anketiranci z bolj pozitivnim stališčem do starih ljudi (r = 0,206, p = 0,047) in anketiranci, ki so vključeni v magistrski študij (r = -0,299, p = 0,023). Večina študentov (94,5 %) v življenju ni imela negativnih izkušenj s starostniki; čim bolj pozitivne so bile njihove izkušnje, tem večja je bila želja po delu s starostniki (r = -0,297, p = 0,029). Klinični mentorji se v primerjavi s študenti bolj zavedajo, da zdravstvena nega starostnika zahteva dodatno specializirano znanje in usposabljanje (%%(2)= 14,896, p = 0,001). Razpravljanje: Raziskava pokaže, da je znanje anketirancev na področju dela s starimi ljudmi pomankljivo. Raziskava tako pokaže pojav negativnega odnosa do starih v družbi pri študentih in kliničnih mentorjih in nizko pripravljenost študentov, da bi izbrali delo s starostniki. Področje zdravstvene nege mora razviti specialne izobraževalne vsebine s področja gerontologije v obliki obveznih in izbirnih predmetov na vseh bolonjskih stopnjah študija, prav tako je potrebna klinična specializacija iz zdravstvene nege starostnika po končani visoki strokovni izobrazbi. Pomembne so tudi pozitivne klinične izkušnje študentov pri delu s starostniki, ki vplivajo na kasnejše odločanje za delo z njimi.

Zdravje, počutje in zadovoljstvo z življenjem najstarejših starih v Sloveniji

Abstract: V javnozdravstvenih in družboslovnih razpravah se podatke za mlajše starejše pogosto posplošuje na vse starostnike, a dejansko se najstarejši stari precej razlikujejo od ostalih starostnikov. Namen članka je pokazati na te razlike z vidika zdravja, počutja in zadovoljstva z življenjem. Uporabili smo podatke 4. vala mednarodne raziskave SHARE (2011). Na vzorcu 1.306 slovenskih starostnikov smo opravili bivariantno analizo in ugotovili, da je samoocena zdravja povezana s starostjo (p = 0,000). Najstarejši stari imajo največ simptomov različnih bolezni (p = 0,000), težav s koncentracijo (p = 0,000) in pomanjkanjem energije (p = 0,001) ter so najbolj omejeni pri dnevnih aktivnostih in opravilih (p = 0,000). Pozitiven odnos do življenja s starostjo upada.
