Abstract:Družbena omrežja so zadnje desetletje po celotnem svetu že zelo razširjena. Uporabili smo delno strukturirani tip intervjuja.

Title:SOCIAL MEDIA USE AND YOUNG ADULT'S MENTAL HEALTH
Abstract:Social networks have been widespread around the world for the last decade. There are advantages and disadvantages to using them. In this thesis, we investigated the use of social networks with a focus on young adults' mental health. In the theoretical part, we first introduced social networks and which are the most popular ones at the moment, how social networks are linked to young people's mental health and presented the negative and positive aspects of social network use, how social networks are linked to education, and we also touched upon the use of social networks in the context of covid, and explored cyber-violence and screen addiction. In the empirical part, we cover the approaches, methods and techniques and describe our research sample. In writing the thesis, we opted for a qualitative phenological research paradigm, using a questionnaire and conducting interviews. We used a semi-structured interview type. Our sampling method is purposive sampling. We conducted 6 semi-structured interviews with participants aged between 18 and 24 years. We coded the interviews in a coding table according to clusters and assigned concepts and categories to them. The questions asked about when the candidates first encountered social networks and which social networks they use, the purposes for which they use social networks, social networks and education, social networks and covid, their experiences of using them, whether they have ever overused social networks and how to limit their use, and if they have ever experienced cyber-violence. We found that our candidates mostly did not experience anything overly negative, but more or less reported self-esteem problems due to the perfectionism that appears on social networks. Most of them use social networks for communication, education and reading news. We found that there is a lot of online violence and it comes in many forms, e.g., blackmail, ridicule, abusive comments, threats etc. When it comes to how to limit the use of social networks, we found that parents should be the ones to do the most. For further research, the sample should be increased to include adolescents, people with mental health problems and the LGBTQ+ community.
