Title:Threats to the political stability of the European Union
Abstract:From the dark continent,1 in the words of one of its best contemporary historians, Europe turned into a model for many people in other parts of the world: a social model stemming from an unprecedentedly ambitious attempt to reconcile democracy and markets with the aim of creating inclusive societies, and a model of open borders and shared sovereignty as a way of collectively managing interdependence. Europe as a model was indeed an attractive proposition for an old continent trying to reinvent itself in a world where it no longer called the shots. Some people went even further, claiming that Europe offered a new model of behaviour in international relations relying on the ‘soft’ power of example and persuasion, as opposed to the more traditional ‘hard’ power represented by military and/or economic coercion, although this particular argument has never been terribly convincing. The European Union (EU) has long been seen as a defender of political stability in a region historically marked by conflict and division. However, the EU has recently faced a number of challenges that threaten its political stability. One of the most pressing challenges for the EU's political stability is the issue of security. The rise of global terrorism, cyber threats and renewed geopolitical tensions have put enormous pressure on the EU's ability to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens. The migration crisis has further exacerbated security concerns and fueled debates about border control and national sovereignty. Drawing on a range of academic sources, EU policy papers and official documents, the present Master's thesis critically examines the EU's responses to challenges to its political stability. It evaluates the effectiveness of existing security policies and cooperation mechanisms in countering external threats. In addition, it assesses the EU's enlargement strategy and its implications for existing and candidate countries.
