Title:Efficiency of blood flow restriction exercises on muscle strength and hypertrophy in patients with musculo-skeletal disorders
Abstract:Blood flow restricted exercise involves the use of specialized cuffs that partially restrict blood flow to the muscles during exercise, which has been shown to improve muscle strength and mass, especially in individuals suffering from atrophy caused by musculoskeletal impairments or postoperative atrophy. High-intensity resistance exercise is often contraindicated in the population with musculoskeletal impairments. Even when not contraindicated, it often causes pain, which can be avoided by using blood flow restricted exercise. Blood flow restricted exercise can be an effective tool for improving muscle mass and strength in the population with musculoskeletal impairments. Positive results of blood flow restricted exercise have been demonstrated in knee osteoarthritis, patellofemoral pain syndrome, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, and knee arthroscopy. Currently, blood flow restricted exercise appears to be a safe modality with few reports of serious side effects. However, blood flow restricted exercise should be performed under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional and according to proven guidelines to ensure the safety and effectiveness of this type of exercise.
