Title:Evaluation of hand hygiene of health professionals in tertiary health care
Abstract:Starting points: Hospital-acquired infections represent a major global problem. Every year, millions of people, who are, due to different illnesses, being treated or residing in various institutions, acquire one of the nosocomial infections. Mortality and morbidity increase in the presence of hospital-acquired infections, so careful hand hygiene is essential to ensure safe, cost-effective, and quality care for our patients. Hospital-acquired infections represent a great burden for patients and healthcare institutions. In addition to prolonged hospitalization and adverse effects on the patient’s health, such infections can also impact the financial condition of hospitals due to increased medical costs, lost hours of labor, and legal disputes. The research aims to investigate the healthcare professionals’ attitude towards and knowledge of hand hygiene and to determine how regular evaluation affects their maintaining of hand hygiene. Methods: The study is based on the quantitative method of descriptive research. The technique of surveying was used with the help of an online survey. The survey questionnaire was adapted from Van de Mortel and the “Hand Hygiene Knowledge Questionnaire for Healthcare Professionals” of the World Health Organization. The research took place at the Ljubljana Eye Clinic. To collect the data, we designed an online questionnaire, which we distributed to the target population via email. The online questionnaire was designed in the online tool 1ka, which was built for creating and analyzing surveys. 1ka was also used for the data collection process. Statistical processing was done using the SPSS program. Results: One hundred respondents participated in the survey. Most respondents believe that hospital-acquired infections occur during the patient’s stay in the hospital. Most respondents also agree that hand hygiene reduces mortality and medical costs associated with hospital-acquired infections. Also, most participants agree that they can effectively transfer their knowledge of hand hygiene to clinical practice. With the help of statistical tests, we did not confirm any of the hypotheses. In the research, we did not find a connection between the hand hygiene of healthcare professionals and demographic factors. Hany hygiene was also not found to be connected with employee satisfaction. The research demonstrated good knowledge of healthcare professionals in the field of hand hygiene. The participants in the study are well aware of the importance of hand hygiene. Discussion: Ensuring that healthcare professionals have adequate knowledge of the role their hands play in the spread of healthcare-associated infections during various patient care activities that may lead to hand contamination is of crucial importance. This awareness is crucial in helping them understand their ability to contribute to the prevention of healthcare-associated infections through effective and sustained behavior change.
