Title:THE NURSES ROLE IN THE MANAGEMENT OF GESTATIONAL DIABETES
Abstract:Introduction: In this diploma thesis, we presented gestational diabetes, a condition that occurs during pregnancy in patiens who previously did not have diabetes. Gestational diabetes typically resolves after childbirth, but patiens who experience it are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. The treatment of gestational diabetes involves dietary modifications, physical activity, and, in some cases, insulin therapy or other medications. Nurses play a key role in educating pregnant women about blood sugar management, monitoring their health status, and providing support in adjusting their diet and lifestyle to ensure a healthy pregnancy. Method: A descriptive method was used in the qualitative research. The primary data for the analysis were obtained using interview techniques. The sample was purposive and included registered nurses who work with gestational diabetes and have more than ten years of professional experience in different workplaces. Results: Six nurses who work daily with diabetic patients participated in the research. We found that the nurses are well aware of their role in managing gestational diabetes and are able to recognize complications effectively. Discussion: In the research, we found that registered nurses play a key role in the management of gestational diabetes. They monitor blood sugar levels, educate pregnant women about the condition, diet, and lifestyle, and provide support with therapies. They play a crucial role in recognizing and preventing complications, while also encouraging pregnant women to adopt healthy lifestyle changes for the rest of their lives. Their knowledge is sufficient to effectively assist pregnant women."
