Abstract:Teoretična izhodišča: Shizofrenija je huda psihotična motnja, katero poleg psihotičnih simptomov pogosto spremljajo tudi številne fizične težave, kot so povečano tveganje za srčno-žilne bolezni, sladkorno bolezen tipa 2 in debelost. Osebe s shizofrenijo imajo krajšo pričakovano življenjsko dobo, kar je v veliki meri posledica nezdravega življenjskega sloga, stranskih učinkov antipsihotičnih zdravil in komorbidnosti.

Abstract:Theoretical background: Schizophrenia is a severe psychotic disorder, which, in addition to psychotic symptoms, is often accompanied by numerous physical problems, such as an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Individuals with schizophrenia have a shorter life expectancy, which is largely a consequence of an unhealthy lifestyle, side effects of antipsychotic medications, and comorbidities. Physiotherapy, particularly in the form of structured physical exercise, can play an important role in reducing risks and improving the physical health of patients. Purpose: The purpose of the thesis was to investigate how physiotherapy can contribute to the improvement of the physical health of patients with schizophrenia. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review. In the theoretical part, we used the descriptive method. In the empirical part, we used the compilation method, the comparative method, and the method of analysis and synthesis. The studies included in the empirical part were searched in databases using keywords and based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Out of 1606 initial results, 9 articles were included in the final analysis. After analyzing these articles, we identified the following categories: the impact on reducing risk factors for comorbid diseases, the impact on lifestyle, and the role of motivation and encouragement. We assigned specific codes to these categories and thus presented the main effects of physiotherapy. Discussion: Physiotherapy significantly contributes to the reduction of risk factors for the development of comorbid diseases in patients with schizophrenia. Structured physical exercise and appropriate motivation by the physiotherapist have proven to be key factors in successfully improving physical health. We also identified a lack of similar Slovenian studies, which opens opportunities for further research in this area and for greater inclusion of physiotherapy in the treatment of patients with schizophrenia.
