Title:The impact of inflation on household consumption in Slovenia
Abstract:Inflation is one of the most significant macroeconomic phenomena that directly affects household consumption. When inflation is present, households need more money for the same quantity of goods and services, which reduces their purchasing power. Consequently, this impacts consumer habits and alters consumer behaviours. Household consumption is also closely linked to gross domestic product (hereinafter GDP). Higher levels of consumption stimulate economic growth, while a decline in consumption can slow it down and thereby negatively affect GDP. Household consumption in Slovenia has additionally been influenced by extraordinary events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, both of which have caused increased economic uncertainty and changes in prices. This thesis examines the impact of inflation on household consumption in Slovenia. The theoretical part presents the fundamental concepts and characteristics of inflation, GDP, and consumption, focusing on their causes, consequences, interrelations, and effects on the economy and households. The empirical part analyses economic indicators covering the period 2016–2023 and presents them in graphical form. Based on the values of selected variables, a bivariate linear regression with two different independent variables was conducted using the PSPP statistical program. The obtained results were interpreted and used to test the research hypotheses.
Keywords:Household consumption, inflation, gross domestic product, consumer behaviour, bivariant linear regression.
