Vsi udeleženci so zaradi ugotovljenih negativnih učinkov uporabe pametnega telefona poskusili spremeniti način uporabe s pomočjo različnih strategij.

Title:Coping with the Negative Consequences of Smartphone Use
Abstract:Smartphones have been a part of our daily life for some time already. Lately, their usage has however become inevitable to actively and fully participate in the social and professional life. The changes brought to the society by the extensive digitalisation and the associated frequent usage of online services, often via smartphones, have – in addition to positive ones – also many negative consequences for the functioning and quality of life of individuals in various areas (including mental, social, cognitive, and physical quality of life). The conceptual and theoretical part of this thesis includes a presentation of specific features of smartphones, positive and negative effects of their usage, and various concepts that are essential to this field. These include problematic smartphone usage, nomophobia, addiction, self-assessment, and self-control. To conclude the theoretical part, some strategies for dealing with the negative effects of smart phone usage are presented. In the empirical part of the study, the qualitative method of semi-structured interviews was used to investigate how adults assess their smartphone usage, what negative consequences of smartphone usage they observe in themselves, and how they cope with them. We concluded that individuals mostly consider their usage to be appropriate, but a more ambivalent picture emerges from the conversations as a whole. The interviewees noticed numerous negative consequences in different areas (mental, behavioral, emotional, in relationships). Due to identified negative effects of smartphone usage, all the participants have tried to change their smartphone usage patterns by using different approaches. The study participants use a variety of methods, such as limiting the usage, changing the content of smart phone usage, and seeking activities that do not include smartphone usage. The used strategies have proven to be (partially) effective. Poor efficiency is more likely the result of, for example, inconsistency in implementing changes or an uncritical view of one's own approach to the application than of shortcomings in the strategies themselves. Rather than learning strategies for dealing with the consequences of excessive usage, work on motivation, self-reflection, critical thinking, and self-control is necessary. The findings of this research could help other individuals dealing with similar issues without the need for professional support of a psychosocial counselor, while also providing a starting point for professionals working in this field.
