Abstract:Zadovoljiva spolnost pomembno prispeva k zdravju, poživlja, podaljšuje življenje in zmanjšuje tveganje za bolezni.

Abstract:Satisfying sexual activity significantly contributes to overall health, enhances vitality, prolongs life, and reduces the risk of various diseases. Nevertheless, sexuality is often overlooked and marginalized, especially among older adults, where societal taboos and misconceptions frequently inhibit open discussion. Stereotypes suggesting that older individuals are sexually inactive due to age–related changes lead to the denial of their own sexuality and to social isolation, which in turn negatively affects their quality of life. Sexuality in later life should not be perceived as inappropriate or unnecessary, but rather as a legitimate and essential aspect of human exstence that contributes to successful ageing, mental vitality, and physical health. This doctoral dissertation examines the interplay between personality traits, social, cultural, and environmental factors, and the maintenance of an active sexual life among older adults (aged 55 and above). It also explores the impact of stereotypical perceptions of ageing and sexuality on the sexual satisfaction of older individuals. The findings highlight the urgent need for educational strategies and supportive frameworks that recognize sexuality in later life as a multidimensional aspect of well–being, regardless of biological age. Central to this are the development of educational programs, increased awareness of the complexity of sexuality in older age, and the implementation of sexual health care models that provide older adults with access to knowledge and support, thereby enhancing their ability to maintain sexual vitality, self–esteem, and overall quality of ageing. The dissertation advocates for the systematic integration of sexual health education for older adults into health care curricula, aiming to improve professional competencies and coun-teract the social devaluation of sexuality in later life. By addressing sexual health in ageing as a public health concern, the study opens avenues for comprehensive preventive measures and improvements in the quality of life of the ageing population.
