Abstract:Uvod in namen: Sindrom relativnega energijskega primankljaja (SREP) nastane zaradi pomanjkanja razpoložljive energije, ki je namenjena delovanju osnovnih fizioloških funkcij.

Title:The effect of relative energy deficiency syndrome on female athletes
Abstract:Introduction and purpose: Relative Energy Deficiency Syndrome (REDs) occurs due to a lack of available energy required for maintaining basic physiological functions. The purpose of this thesis was to review the literature on the effects of REDs on the health of female athletes and to define the role of physiotherapists in its recognition and management. Methods: The thesis is based on a literature review using the PubMed database. Inclusion criteria covered literature reviews, meta-analyses, and clinical studies addressing REDs in women, published between 2015 and 2025. Results: The literature review showed that REDs affect multiple organ systems (reproductive, skeletal, endocrine, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and immune). The physiotherapist’s role is essential in assessment, diagnosis, and in leading preventive and rehabilitative exercise programs. Usability: The thesis provides practical guidelines for physiotherapists in managing female athletes with REDs. It could serve as a basis for developing preventive strategies and individualized approaches in sports practice. Limitations: The main limitation is the lack of research comprehensively addressing the role of physiotherapists in REDs. Moreover, physiotherapists often lack sufficient knowledge of REDs.
