Title:The Presence of Anticipatory Grief in Informal Caregiver of People with Dementia
Abstract:The master’s thesis examines the phenomenon of anticipatory grief among informal caregivers of people with dementia, one of the key yet often unrecognised psychological processes in long-term care. The aim of the research was to gain an in-depth understanding of how informal caregivers experience anticipatory grief and what emotional, identity-related, and social challenges they face as their relatives gradually lose cognitive and personal capacities. A qualitative research approach was applied, using semi-structured interviews with ten informal caregivers of people with dementia. The analysis showed that anticipatory grief manifests as a multidimensional process imbued with feelings of helplessness, uncertainty, guilt, loneliness, and ambivalence towards the person with dementia. The findings reveal that psychosocial support for caregivers is often insufficient, fragmented, and difficult to access, contributing to increased psychological distress and the risk of burnout. The thesis highlights the importance of a comprehensive understanding of anticipatory grief and the development of effective and accessible psychosocial interventions that begin during the illness, when grief often occurs quietly and unrecognised. It contributes to a deeper understanding of the complexity of the caregiving experience for informal caregivers of people with dementia.
