Abstract:The advancement of technology in the 21st century has brought numerous innovations to the world in which we live, forcing humanity to adapt. This technological innovation has led to transformations in how we communicate, how we value our interpersonal relationships, and even how we measure our quality of life. The social robot is a product of the 21st century and is a great example of how technology can contribute to one’s quality of life. It is predominantly meant for the older adults. The social robot improves the quality of life for the older adults through offering social experiences and providing emotional responses which ultimately addresses the loneliness issue that many older adults face. In this paper we explore the relationship between the older adults and the effect of the social robot on their quality of life. After a search in the WoS and PubMed’s database of scientific papers, we have extracted 11 helpful scientific papers that offer insights into this possible relationship. After consensus, we found that a social robot can’t replace human warmth and embrace; however, it still offers benefits to the older adults. Research suggests that living with a social robot can create positive interactions that reduce stress and improve a person’s mood. Depending on the design, the social robot can even help organize daily activities and encourage physical activity to contribute to a healthier lifestyle.
