Metode: Uporabili smo kvalitativni pristop in izvedli 10 strukturiranih intervjujev z zaposlenimi v ZUDV Dornava. O predlogih zakonov so seznanjeni predvsem preko medijev, le redki so aktivno iskali dodatne informacije.

Abstract:Introduction: Euthanasia is an increasingly debated topic in Slovenia, raising complex ethical, legal, and clinical questions. A key actor in this debate is the civil society association Srebrna nit, which, through the proposal of the Law on Assistance in Voluntary Termination of Life (ZPPKŽ), has stimulated broader societal and professional discussion. A particularly vulnerable group in this context are individuals with acquired brain injury (ABI), who often face prolonged suffering, high dependence on others, and limited decision-making capacity. Methods: This study employed a qualitative approach, conducting 10 structured interviews with employees of ZUDV Dornava. The interviews provided in-depth insights into the attitudes and experiences of professionals regarding euthanasia in persons with ABI. Data were analyzed inductively, generating codes that were organized into key themes reflecting ethical, legal, and professional perspectives, as well as the dilemmas encountered by staff in their daily work. Results: The findings indicate diverse perspectives among employees, ranging from support to opposition. Most perceive euthanasia as a means of preventing prolonged suffering and ensuring a dignified death, while others emphasize palliative care as a more appropriate alternative and warn against the risk of abuse. Information about the proposed legislation was primarily obtained through media sources, with only a few respondents seeking additional details independently. Some had encountered explicit requests for euthanasia from patients or relatives in practice, though such experiences were rare. A recurrent theme was the importance of advance directives, given that individuals with ABI often lack the capacity to make autonomous decisions. Discussion and Conclusion: The study shows that euthanasia in the context of ABI is primarily understood as a pathway to a dignified death, yet it remains accompanied by ethical dilemmas, potential misuse, and insufficient legal regulation. The findings highlight the need for clear legislative frameworks and continuous professional education to better equip staff for addressing this sensitive issue.
