Abstract:Acute stress is common among students and can affect mental and physical health. In stress management, there is increasing interest in breathing exercises, which influence the autonomic nervous system and promote relaxation. In this thesis, we examined the management and perception of acute stress among physiotherapy students by including structured breathing exercises. Methodology: Data were collected with two questionnaires completed before and after a one-month intervention. The study included 20 physiotherapy students (experimental group n = 10, control group n = 10), who reported on psychological state, psychophysical well-being and awareness of breathing exercises. Results: At baseline, the groups were comparable in overall psychological state. After one month, statistically significant differences appeared between the groups in the total psychological state score (MWU = 12.000; p = 0.003), with lower psychological burden in the experimental group. In psychophysical well-being and self-rated general health, no major statistically significant differences were observed, although descriptive data indicated a slightly more favourable trend in the experimental group. Students’ awareness of the importance of breathing exercises increased, and most participants recognised breathing as an important strategy for coping with stress. Discussion: The results partly support the hypothesis of a beneficial effect of structured breathing exercises on acute stress; however, due to the small sample, short intervention period and self-reported measures, they should be interpreted as preliminary and mainly as a basis for further research.
