Abstract:Introduction: Chronic wounds have a negative impact on the quality of life of both patients and their families. Common chronic wounds include diabetic foot, venous ulcer, arterial ulcer and pressure ulcer. So-called light therapy is effective in healing certain chronic wounds. We have tried to break down the broad concept of this therapy and present its main features. We have found many benefits of its use from research, but we have tried to focus on the use of light therapy for healing chronic wounds. Research methodology: We used a descriptive method of data collection, quantitative in nature. The survey was conducted using an online questionnaire 1KA among healthcare providers dealing with chronic wounds. The data obtained were processed in Microsoft Excel. Results: 51 % of healthcare providers are confronted with the use of light therapy for chronic wounds. Those with more experience (11−20 years: 67 %) and those who deal with wounds on a daily basis (83 %) are the most likely to use light therapy. Polarised polychromatic light is most commonly used (77 %), for venous ulcers (49 %). More than half (51 %) of the respondents consider the effect of light therapy to be positive, and 75 % of the respondents think that light therapy should be available in all institutions. Discussion and conclusion: The finding that more than half of the respondents use light therapy in wound care indicates an awareness of its positive effects. However, more scientific research is needed on the mechanisms of action of light therapy, its effects and its use. Taking into account the aspects of cost-effectiveness and efficiency, in our opinion, this therapy has great potential to support the healing of chronic wounds.
