Abstract:This chapter examines the role of the media in the rise of populism in contemporary European democracies. In doing so, it highlights the characteristics of populist politics, particularly in terms of how its messages are disseminated and the mechanisms it employs. It also analyses the changing nature of media in interdependence with other social changes. One can assume that the influence of the media on the spread of a certain—in this case, populist—type of political message depends on the broader political constellation and the political impulses to which people are exposed. It can be claimed that although the media undoubtedly influence the spread of populist messages, they are not the ones who either enable or prevent the success of populist protagonists. A lot depends on their rivals from the ranks of established politics.
