Title:Psychosocial Support for Professional Firefighters
Abstract:The study examines the experience of occupational stress among professional firefighters, their coping strategies, their attitudes toward psychosocial support, and the forms of support they perceive as most beneficial. A qualitative study was conducted on a sample of ten professional firefighters using semi-structured interviews, which enabled an in-depth understanding of the personal, organizational, and situational factors shaping their experience of occupational stress. The results indicate that the participants perceive firefighting as a highly stressful profession, primarily due to alarm activation, which they identify as the main factor contributing to stress. The alarm emerges as a powerful acute stressor with significant physiological effects. Additional stressors include driving to emergency scenes and particularly demanding interventions, such as road and railway accidents, incidents involving children, suicides, and injuries to colleagues. In coping with occupational stress, firefighters attribute the greatest importance to conversation, especially with colleagues or close family members, although they tend to be protective regarding the amount of information they share. Physical activity also plays an important role in stress management, and some participants mentioned conversations with colleagues accompanied by alcohol. Despite being familiar with relaxation techniques, most do not apply them in practice, and none of the participants had sought professional psychological support to date. Knowledge about mental health disorders and occupational stress appears to be limited, even though post-traumatic stress disorder is widespread among professional firefighters. The participants assess that the most effective forms of support would be decompression or defusing conversations conducted as needed or following particularly demanding interventions. Due to the diversity of attitudes and preferences, it is not possible to define a single optimal form of support. This diversity highlights the importance of offering psychosocial support in multiple forms, which would allow for broader inclusion of professional firefighters and better consideration of their diverse needs, preferences, and levels of readiness to engage. Participants also consider mental health seminars, improved organizational conditions, renovation of facilities, and the strengthening of interpersonal relationships within the team to be beneficial.
