Abstract:Izhodišča: Socialna izolacija in osamljenost sta v sodobni družbi vse pogostejši in izrazitejši težavi, ki preraščata v resen javnozdravstveni in družbeni problem.

Title:Social Isolation of the Elderly: Nurses Role in Recognizing and Reducing the Effects of Loneliness
Abstract:Background: Social isolation and loneliness are increasingly common and serious problems in modern society, which are growing into a serious public health and social issue. Nurses play a key role in addressing loneliness and isolation among the elderly on several levels. The purpose of the study is to examine the role of graduate nurses in recognizing and reducing the consequences of loneliness and social isolation in the elderly. Method: A quantitative research approach was used with a survey technique. The survey questionnaire was based on a literature review. The sample was purposive, consisting of 107 graduate nurses at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels who provide or have provided nursing care to older adults. The data for the study were collected using the 1KA online survey and were obtained using the snowball method. The study was conducted in January 2026. Results: The results show the respondents' assessment that older adults most significantly miss the company of close people, especially relatives and friends whom they trust and can rely on in times of distress. Nurses most often report measures aimed at empathetic communication, building trust, and actively encouraging the inclusion of older people in social activities, even when mistrust, withdrawal, or apathy are present. Nurses believe that they act ethically and compassionately in their work, ensure confidentiality, respect the dignity of older adults, and approach the topic of loneliness with sensitivity. Nevertheless, it has been shown that nurses rarely use standardized tools to measure loneliness or social isolation and do not consider themselves sufficiently trained to systematically assess this area. Discussion: The findings indicate a need for further development of the competencies of graduate nurses, particularly in the area of standardized assessment of loneliness and social isolation and the selection of targeted interventions. For further research, we recommend studies that would define, from the perspective of older adults, which activities most effectively encourage them to socialize and actively participate in the community. Such findings would enable more tailored intervention planning and enhance the effectiveness of professional measures in practice.
