Abstract:This master’s thesis explores the meaning of life in old age, one of the key existential questions in modern society. Population ageing brings significant changes on both social and individual levels, which makes understanding the experience of life’s meaning among older adults increasingly important. The aim of the study was to examine how older adults, aged 65 and above, perceive and experience the meaning of life, and to identify the factors that contribute to it. Special attention was devoted to the role of interpersonal relationships, independence, living environment, and religion or personal beliefs. The research employed a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews conducted with 16 participants from both urban and rural areas, including independent and dependent individuals, as well as those living at home or in institutional care. Content analysis revealed that the most frequently mentioned sources of meaning were family, friendships and other relationships, health and independence. Participants who were dependent, institutionalized, and lacked a social network more often reported an absence of meaning. Differences also emerged regarding independence—independent participants associated meaning with activities and freedom of choice, while dependent participants emphasized relationships and basic care. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the psychosocial needs of older adults and provide a basis for developing professional support that considers the importance of life’s meaning in old age.
