Abstract:Ankle sprain is one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries, often occurring during sports activities. Ankle sprain treatment should begin as early as possible, as delaying rehabilitation increases the risk of chronic pain, instability and reccurent injuries, with timely and proper rehabilitation – based on a combination of advanced therapeutic methods – being of key importance. The aim of this thesis was to explore and present conservative physiotherapy methods used in the treatment of ankle sprains by reviewing professional and scientific literature. The empirical part included analysis of nine clinical studies that examined the effects of various physiotherapeutic interventions such as manual therapy, proprioceptive exercises, cryotherapy, taping, electrical stimulation, and the use of ankle orthoses. The results indicate that the most effective treatments were those that combined multiple conservative approaches. In particular, the combination of proprioceptive exercises and manual therapy proved to be the most beneficial. The findings confirm the importance of a holistic and individualized physiotherapy approach, which improves joint mobility, enhances stability, and reduces the risk of recurrent injuries. The thesis also highlights the need for further research on physiotherapy treatment methods for ankle sprains, especially in the Slovenian context.
