Abstract:Theoretical background: Oral health has an important impact on the quality of life of older people and is linked to daily functions and general health, but prevention is often neglected. The aim of this study was to describe oral hygiene habits, perceived problems and awareness of the importance of oral hygiene among older people. Methods: A descriptive, quantitative, cross-sectional method was used. Data were collected using a self-designed online questionnaire (18 questions) from 111 subjects aged ≥ 65 years and statistically processed in Excel. Results: The analysis showed that 75 % of respondents brush their teeth twice a day or more. 52 % of participants use dentures. Dry mouth occurs occasionally or daily in 29 %, with the impact of dry mouth on daily life rated as having no or a slight impact in the majority of participants (85 %). The importance of oral hygiene for general health was rated as important or very important by 99 % of respondents. Discussion: The results show good awareness and favourable habits, but also highlight the need for tailored prevention, regular follow-up and additional support for more vulnerable groups.
