Abstract:V magistrski nalogi raziskujemo področje socialne gerontologije, natančneje kakovost življenja starejših, ki smo jih razdelili v dve skupini starostnikov glede na različno življenjsko okolje. Spoznali smo njihove želje, potrebe, omejitve in pričakovanja.

Abstract:This master thesis explores the field of social gerontology, and more specifically the quality of life of elderly people who were divided into two groups according to different living environment. The first group of the elderly are individuals who live in institutional care (Home for the elderly), whereas the others live at home. The issue presented is of great interest because the elderly in our society are often stigmatized and marginalized from social events. Even their economic standard is often quite low (low pensions), even lower than the social average, because of that many older people live in poverty and deprivation. Consequently, many struggle to pay current financial liabilities (e.g. paying bills for the consumed electricity, the rent for an apartment etc.). For many of them who live in homes for the elderly payment of care in those institutions presents a major financial investment. The theoretical part of the master's thesis presents an overview of the literature in the field of social gerontology respectively, life of the elderly, historical changes in the perception of the elderly and their quality of life. The empirical part of the thesis covers its own study, which was conducted using semi-structured interviews, and studies whether there are differences and similarities between the two groups of the elderly in the quality of life of both. Through the research we found certain similarities as well as differences in the way and dynamics of life of both studied groups. We learned about their desires, needs, constraints and expectations.
