Title:Experience of parental burnout
Abstract:The present MA paper is trying to examine the experience of parents that have designated themselves in their parent roles as burnt out. We were most of all interested in their thoughts, convictions and feelings, how their behaviour towards themselves, their children and their job changed, what symptoms and causes are presented by the parents, what forms of assistance and support are they receiving when bringing up their children and what would, according to their opinion, help them to feel better. During the analysis we used the qualitative method of research. The results of the analysis showed that thoughts on escape “I would drop everything and go,” thoughts considered typical of burnout, appear with 4 out of 10 parents. 3 out of 10 parents are comparing themselves to other parents, which indicated a perfectionist manner of thinking. With 2 out of 10 parents, we reached a conclusion “I am not a good mother because I am not dedicating enough time for them”. 3 out of 10 are replacing thoughts with feelings. Most of parents are with their burnout confronting three prevalent feelings, namely, feeling of anger (5 out of 10 parents), feeling of shame (3 out of 10 parents) and feeling of anger (3 out of 10 parents). With 4 out of 10 parents, the symptoms are tiredness and exhaustion. 7 out of 10 parents have troubles with sleeplessness. 3 out of 10 parents have problems with headaches and digestion. The parents are naming different factors causing their burnout: 2 out of 10 perfectionism, 2 out of 10 their child’s illness, 3 out of 10 lack of sleep and 2 out of 10 their own convictions from childhood. The parent’s behaviour has changed towards themselves (they don’t take time for themselves) and towards the children (lack of patience, irritability) but not towards their job (it represents security and relaxation for them). We assume the problem lies mostly in the parent’s mentality in the sense that since they have become parents they no longer take time for themselves. More attention should be dedicated to awareness about the meaning and consequences of parental burnout, be it for the parent or for their child/children.
