Impact of information and communication technology use on the well-being of older adults in the (post-)COVID-19 pandemic era
Nikolaj Lipič, Mitja Bagari, Nejc Krašovec, Marija Ovsenik, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Introduction: The period during and after the COVID-19 pandemic was marked by accelerated digitalisation and digital transformation. For most older adults, the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) presents numerous challenges and dilemmas, as well as facing hardships and dangers. All of this affects the well-being of older adults. The objective of the study is to examine the impact of ICT use on the well-being of older adults in the (post-)COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A qualitative research approach was applied, with data collected through semi-structured, in-depth, individual interviews with 15 older adults aged 65-87 years. We analysed the data collected using qualitative content analysis. Results: Older adults had different perceptions of the impact of accelerated ICT use on their well-being during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Some reported positive effects of increased ICT use on their well-being, particularly in maintaining social contacts, building stronger connections with others, and improving communication accessibility during limited in- person contact. They also highlighted greater digital confidence. The increased use of ICT during the pandemic was not universal among older adults. Conclusion: For older adults who use ICT moderately or regularly, this use maintained or even encouraged their well-being, while for some, it had no effect. The recommendations of older adults constitute an important contribution of the study for decision-makers in the field of digitalization and the well-being of older adults. They also highlighted the need for basic digital literacy programs for older adults, while accounting for the circumstances that affect their well-being.

The digital technology–well-being paradox: No link between digital use and life satisfaction in older adults
Barbara Grintal, Peter Seljak, Jana Goriup, Voyko Kavcic, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Introduction: The impact of digital technology use on older adults’ well-being remains uncertain. The objective of this study was to investigate the independent association between information and communication technology (ICT) use and life satisfaction in older adults, while accounting for socioeconomic, health, and social covariates. Methods: We analyzed crosssectional data from the 2025 DIGOLD survey of community-dwelling adults aged ≥60 years in Slovenia. Participants (N=983; mean age 72 years; 62% women) completed the Satisfaction With Life Scale and reported ICT use frequency (1=never to 5=daily). Covariates included age, gender, living arrangements, marital status, residence, education, household size, perceived economic situation, self-rated physical and mental health, and functional abilities. We computed Pearson correlations and fitted multiple linear regression models. Results: ICT use correlated positively with life satisfaction in bivariate analyses (r=0.25, p<.001). In the full multivariable model (adjusted R2=0.32), ICT use was not a significant independent predictor (p>.05). Higher life satisfaction was associated with better mental health (β=0.252, p<.001), better financial situation (β=0.280, p<.001), better physical health (β=0.118, p=.001), and better functional abilities (β=0.085, p=.021); lower life satisfaction was associated with being unmarried (β=−0.081, p=.006) and institutional living (β=−0.115, p<.001). Discussion: Among older Slovenians, the simple positive link between ICT use and life satisfaction was fully explained by socioeconomic and health advantages among frequent users. Digital engagement alone may not raise life satisfaction without concurrent gains in health, financial security, or social connection. Digital inclusion initiatives should emphasize meaningful, socially connective uses of technology and be paired with supports that address mental and physical health and economic well-being.

Education against ageism, stereotypes and gerontophobia about the sexuality of older adults (development of a model for integrated promotion of sexual life of older adults)
Karmen Petek, Jana Goriup, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This study aims to develop an educational model and guidelines for promoting sexual health in older adults (55+), addressing ageism, stereotypes, and gerontophobia. Despite its significance for successful aging, sexual health in older adults is often neglected. The study involved 651 participants (aged 55-75) and used a quantitative approach, examining factors like health status, sexual activity, and education through an online survey. Key findings include a positive correlation between health and sexual satisfaction (r = 0.2 to 0.4, p < 0.001) and the importance of sexual knowledge in life satisfaction (F = 90.027; p < 0.001). Results underline the need for tailored educational programs and open discussions on sexuality. The proposed model aims to improve sexual well-being and overall quality of life, promoting a holistic approach to sexual health care to older adults. These findings are relevant for shaping policies and interventions in Slovenia and globally.

A mixed-methods study of patient and healthcare professional perceptions of care pathways for knee osteoarthritis
Pika Krištof Mirt, Karmen Erjavec, Sabina Krsnik, Petra Kotnik, Mohsen Hussein, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background: This study aimed to address research gap concerning the perception of the care pathway for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) patients, focusing on both the patient and health professional perspectives in countries with inefficient health systems, such as Slovenia, by examining patient satisfaction with conservative treatment, assessing the perceptions of both patients and health professionals regarding the latter's involvement, and justifying the chosen KOA treatment approaches. Methods: A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with KOA patients (n = 82) and healthcare professionals (n = 68). Results: The care pathway for conservative KOA treatment in Slovenia begins with general practitioners (GPs), who conduct initial examinations, prescribe analgesics, and refer patients to radiologists and orthopaedic surgeons. GPs received high satisfaction ratings (μ = 4.32). Orthopaedic surgeons, who confirm diagnoses and create treatment plans involving physiotherapy, medication, or joint injections, also received high satisfaction scores (μ = 4.47), despite long waiting times. Consultations with radiologists, mentioned less frequently, again received high satisfaction scores (μ = 4.67). Physiotherapists, consulted later, received high satisfaction scores (μ = 4.16) but long waiting times resurfaced. Referrals to rheumatologists occur for systemic diseases or ineffective conservative treatments. Psychologists, occupational therapists, and dieticians are rarely consulted, indicating limited integration into the treatment pathway. A comparison of health professionals' involvement showed that health professionals consider GP involvement less necessary (μ = 2.47) than patients do (μ = 2.82, p = 0.015). The same applies to radiologists (μ = 2.47 vs. μ = 2.87, p = 0.004), reflecting different views on diagnostic imaging. Our qualitative investigation revealed that, due to long waiting times, an alternative care pathway is developing with orthopaedic surgeons as the initial point of contact, bypassing GPs, and highlighted that patients and healthcare professionals differently perceive the latter's treatment roles. Conclusions: The current conservative KOA care pathway lacks initial lifestyle change advice from the GP, referrals for conservative treatments, and a multidisciplinary team engaged in regular treatment monitoring and adjustment. Our mixed-methods research approach highlighted significant differences in perceptions of the treatment process and the roles of health professionals; the knowledge supplied of those differences should support experts and policymakers to optimise care pathways in Slovenia.

Podatki so bili zbrani s pomočjo anketnega vprašalnika.
