Abstract:V diplomskem delu raziskujemo uporabo psihoaktivne substance, imenovane gama-hidroksibutirat, znotraj LGBT skupnosti, natančneje med homoseksualnimi moškimi.

Title:THE USE OF GAMMA-HYDROXYBUTYRATE AMONGST HOMOSEXUAL MEN IN SLOVENIA
Abstract:In the bachelor's thesis, we research the use of a psychoactive substance called Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate (GHB) within the LGBT community, specifically among homosexual men. Based on existing literature in this field, we explored theories related to the heightened sensitivity of homosexual men and their susceptibility to excessive use of psychoactive substances. More specifically, our focus was on GHB, as we observed that this substance is frequently used among homosexual men, in line with theoretical premises. GHB is a central nervous system depressant that acts as a stimulant in lower doses. It induces euphoria, increased energy, sociability, and also enhances libido. The substance is highly sensitive to dosage; higher doses can lead to dizziness, drowsiness, vomiting, and loss of consciousness. Due to these effects, it is also used for purposes of sexual assault. GHB can lead to both psychological and physical dependence. We conducted a qualitative study and used semi-structured interviews to explore the experiences and consequences of GHB users who identify as homosexual men . The results of the empirical part of the thesis confirm the theoretical premises that despite the associated stigma, GHB use is quite popular, especially for casual sexual encounters. All users reported both positive and negative experiences, regardless of their attitude toward the substance. According to the study participants, GHB is relatively widespread within the specific cohort of homosexual men we examined in our region. All participants believe that its use has a negative impact, whether due to addiction, overdose consequences, or the inability to experience sexuality without the use of this substance. We believe that this topic is relevant since limited statistical data suggests an increase in GHB use, and public awareness is low. With this thesis, we aim to encourage efforts to reduce the risk of addiction and raise awareness among the general public about the issues related to a substance that is most prevalent within this specific subculture but is by no means limited to it.
