Title:LINKS BETWEEN CRITICISM AND PRAISE IN CHILDHOOD AND BETWEEN SELF-IMAGE IN ADULTHOOD
Abstract:In the thesis, we investigated the connection between criticism and praise in childhood on the self-image of individuals in adulthood. In the theoretical part, from the point of view of several experts, we defined the concept of self-image and, in connection with it, the concept of self-esteem, we also mentioned self-confidence. We focused on the structure and development of self-concept and explored influences on both self-image and self-esteem. Also, from the point of view of various researchers, we determined how parental praise and criticism of children and teenagers are connected to the construction of their self-image, while also touching on parenting styles. In the empirical part of the assignment, we conducted research using qualitative methodology. We interviewed 10 working interviewees in the age range from 30 to 60 years. We found that the interviewees generally have a good or at least satisfactory general self-image, as well as physical, academic and social self-image. Regarding the reactions of the interviewees to praise and criticism from their surroundings in the present, we came to the realization that they mostly respond to praise from colleagues with positive reactions, while no one reports unpleasant feelings when responding to praise from friends. The interviewees give more importance to the praise of friends, but at the same time, they are also more affected by the criticism of those close to them. During their childhood, the interviewees were mostly praised by their parents for their work and study habits. The way their parents praised them was dominated by the verbal label. As part of the criticisms, we found that the vast majority of the interviewees received criticism of their behavior. As a way of criticizing, all the interviewees cited criticism with words. Most of the interviewees estimate that praise and criticism from childhood had a significant impact on their current self-image and thus on their current reactions to events from their surroundings. Also, most of them are aware of the influence of praise and criticism from their parents on their current self-image and on the way they experience themselves in interaction with their surroundings.
