Ugotovljene značilnosti odraslih otrok staršev s škodljivo rabo alkohola lahko pomagajo psihosocialnim svetovalcem, do lažje prepoznave stiske in težave omenjene ranljive skupine.

Title:COGNITIVE, BEHAVIORAL, AND PSYCHOSOMATIC CHARACTERISTIC OF ADULT CHILDREN OF PARENTS WITH HARMFUL ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION
Abstract:Children in families with harmful alcohol use often take on parenting tasks they cannot cope with, are left to fend for themselves and often suppress their needs out of shame. Later in life they compulsively use extreme behaviours in order to try to regulate and control emotions that cannot be processed mentally. Their internal dialogue can take the form of negative automatic thoughts, which are nothing more than assumptions that can have a negative impact on emotions and behaviour. All unprocessed emotions manifest themselves on the body in the form of psychosomatic symptoms. The aim of this thesis was to investigate cognitive-behavioural characteristics and psychosomatic symptoms in adult children of parents with harmful alcohol use. The participants were 11 adult children of parents with harmful use of alcohol, aged 26–53 years, of both sexes (m = 5, f = 6), members of the therapeutic community Mitikas Institute. The study used personal informal documents in the form of diaries and CVs. The analysis of diaries and CVs revealed that the cognitive, behavioural characteristics of adult children of parents with harmful alcohol use prevent them from recognising their own needs and boundaries due to developed defence mechanisms that protect against suffering and emotional pain. The most frequently perceived behaviours are repression and avoidance. We also found that psychosomatic problems were present in all participants. In the future, it would be prudent to cover a larger sample and compare adult children of parents with harmful alcohol use with a group of adult children of parents who did not abuse alcohol and to include other factors that might influence the development of cognitive, behavioural characteristics and psychosomatic problems. The identified characteristics of adult children of parents with harmful alcohol use may help psychosocial counsellors to better identify the distress and problems of this vulnerable group.
