Title:Quality of stay and the impact of finance on retirees- a case study in a public and private retirement home
Abstract:A problem that Slovenia is facing is ageing population, as, according to official data, the percentage of the elderly will be increasing on a yearly basis until 2100 when the percentage of the elderly aged above 65 will considerably exceed 32% of Slovenia's population. A few years ago, the main problem was long waiting periods, whereas the situation is now reverse: spots in retirement homes are available, but there is lack of personnel, so some retirement homes cannot accept new residents and selecting a private retirement home is substantially more expensive than a public retirement home. Different negative comments on private retirement homes can be found in the media, claiming that there is no substantial difference between public and private retirement homes, unless that private retirement homes earn money only for their own interests. For this reason, and based on research work, we determined and studied the actual housing quality and the financial aspect of residing in a public and private retirement home, and found that residents, personnel and family members in a private retirement home are more satisfied with housing and care than research respondents residing in a public retirement home. Private retirement homes are more expensive than public ones because public retirement homes are provided with an immovable property for their activities by the state, whereas private retirement homes have to find their own immovable property; however, residents are entitled to the same rights as in the public retirement home so there are no differences. Residents in a public retirement home would want to reside in a private retirement home, but the crucial problem is money or their financial state, as they cannot afford to pay for the private retirement home only with their pension money or with the help of their families. The modern society is becoming increasingly culturally diverse. "There are fewer Slovenian citizens and more and more foreign citizens" is a proof that retirement homes will have to participate in activities in the field of intercultural differences and intercultural communication in the scope of activities they organise, in order to learn about foreign cultures from the perspective of habits, traditions, diet, music, etc.
